Many of you may be familiar with our performance management system, Kitman Labs, and if you aren’t, we hope to give more insight into our unique collaboration. Kitman labs is an athlete intelligence platform used in professional sports including the, premier league and NFL, that was developed to revolutionize how sporting organizations leverage data and analytics to advance human performance. We are fortunate to be the first clinic in the world to contribute to the development of the clinical side of this platform at PS+R. As part this development, you’ll see more new iPads in the clinic and requests to track your daily wellness! Tracking all aspects of your wellness is a unique and critical part of improving your performance whether you are rehabbing an injury or working towards performing at your best. We hope to use this monthly newsletter to bring you insights into the unique processes we are building at PS+R to bridge the science of sport performance and the best of rehabilitation under one small, innovative roof!

Libby’s Research

Libby recently published an article in the Journal “Pain Research and Management” that reviewed the literature on how feeling helpless in the context of pain affects your cognitive function. It turns out there is some evidence that being focused on your pain does possibly affect your attention and memory, however, this is an area that needs more research. She has three presentations coming up at the Physical Therapy national conference (CSM) in Boston in February to present her work on how anxiety and depression impact patient reported outcome measures and how we can simplify these measures with a single question.

Where in the world is Steve and the USMNT?

In January 2024, the “United States Mens National team (USMNT)” had trained in Orlando, FL and had a closed door match vs Argentina powerhouse River Plate in Tampa on January 13th. Next, they will head to San Antonio Texas for a friendly
match against Slovenia. You can catch Steve and the USMNT on Fox Sports 1 (FS1).

Think Your Posture is Causing Your Low Back Pain? Think Again!

Did you know that research doesn’t support the link between poor posture and low back pain? Groundbreaking research led by Australian Physical Therapist, Peter O’Sullivan, was published in one of the most prestigious medical journals, The Lancet. The study found that “what’s healthy for your spine is to learn to relax it and move it in a
normal way, engage with activity, movement.” Learning to relax your muscles and
progressively improve your capacity by “loading” or strengthening all muscles in your body has shown to have the best outcomes for people with low back pain.

So ditch the “rules” we hear about low back pain including “stand up straight,” “brace
your core,” and “lift with a straight back” and let us help get you on the path to
progressive loading and your best life yet.

“Before meeting Steve, I had been out of the water for over a year from an injury caused by a chiropractor adjustment gone wrong. As a former competitive surfer and Surf Industry sales rep -being out of the water for a year was brutal. I had sold all my surfboards and just thought surfing was behind me. In my first meeting with Steve he did a very thorough assessment, more detailed then the orthopedic surgeon. He quickly pin pointed my issue and came up with a game plan.

Steve’s approach is very innovative, scientific, and different then anything I had experienced up to that point. I dedicated myself to the process and was back in the water surfing in 3 months. His commitment to me and return to performance approach is unmatched. Thank you Steve for giving me my life back.”
