Dr. Libby Bergman is a physical therapist, educator, and researcher specializing in orthopedic and sports rehabilitation, with expertise in complex hip conditions, hip dysplasia, and nonarthritic hip pain. She is a Board-Certified Orthopedic Clinical Specialist (OCS) and a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapy (FAAOMPT).
Libby earned her Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from the University of St. Augustine and her PhD in Physical Therapy from Texas Woman’s University. She currently serves as Director of Rehab and Innovation at Performance Science + Rehab and as an Assistant Professor in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at the University of Charleston.
Her clinical approach combines a detailed physical examination with strength and movement assessment, exercise prescription, manual therapy, and performance testing. She enjoys working with active individuals across the lifespan, from recreational athletes to high-level competitors, and has particular interest in helping patients with persistent or complex musculoskeletal problems who have struggled to understand the source of their symptoms or find a clear path forward.
Libby’s research focuses on improving the identification and management of nonarthritic hip conditions, particularly acetabular dysplasia. Her work examines how physical examination findings, patient-reported symptoms, and imaging can be integrated to help clinicians recognize hip dysplasia earlier and better guide treatment decisions. She is actively involved in collaborative research examining clinical characteristics and outcomes in individuals with hip dysplasia and femoroacetabular impingement.
As both a clinician and researcher, Libby is passionate about translating emerging evidence into practical, individualized care. Her goal is not simply to help patients recover from pain or injury, but to help them understand their bodies, return confidently to the activities they value, and build the physical capacity needed to perform at their best.
Outside of the clinic and classroom, Libby is an endurance athlete who has competed in four long-distance triathlon world championship events, including the Ironman World Championships in Kona. She also enjoys ultramarathon running, surfing, and traveling with her husband and four children.
