At PS+R we are all about building and supporting teams. This month, Steve was invited to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to talk about leadership in business and sport. Steve gave an inspiring talk about lessons he’s learned in professional sport and how to use those lessons to improve team building and morale in a business setting.
Our PS+R technology partnerships continue to grow! Sparta Science has been a long time supporter of PS+R and we are excited to continue our work with Sparta digging deeper into our athlete analytics. At the end of 2023, we had the honor of profiling the Flagler Women’s Tennis Team. We will be working with Sparta Science to extract insights on these athlete’s performance and injury risk factors throughout their 2024 season. This unique collaboration will help us tailor our movement profiling and interventions in addition to providing important data on how our profile metrics play out across one or multiple seasons. The insights we gain from this collaboration push the boundaries of the science of sport performance and physical therapy, and help us bring the best, most cutting edge services to you in the clinic, on the field, and everywhere you perform.
Movement analysis at PS+R got a new tool this month- Motion IQ.
Motion IQ is a video based tool that uses computer vision and machine learning to help us quantify movement patterns such as a squat or lunge. Look for us to be digging deeper into your movement quality with this incredible tool at your next profiling session.
PS+R Soccer Academy
The inaugural cohort of PS+R soccer academy began training with Steve this month. This unique small group format is tailored for youth athletes who have the desire to play at the collegiate level and beyond. The new PS+R Soccer Academy is a four month long program designed to improve each athlete’s technical, positional, movement skill and strength as it relates to physical development in soccer. Players get to utilize GPS units, wellness monitoring tools, and S&C software while participating in weekly on-field training sessions to mimic a professional environment. Stay tuned for additional cohorts in the future!
Libby’s Research
Libby headed to Boston this month for the American Physical Therapy Association’s main conference where she presented three posters. This pre-dissertation work included a review of the literature on pain catastrophizing and two database analyses she did as part of an NIH-funded data science program. The databases tracked long term outcomes and surgical findings for patients in a hip preservation surgeon’s practice. Libby used prediction modeling to determine how much patient reported outcome measures are affected by anxiety and depression. Libby will continue her collaboration with Dr. Wells on her dissertation study by incorporating physical therapy tests and measures for all patients experiencing hip pain who visit Dr. Wells within the Baylor, Scott and White Health System.
Where in the world is Steve and the USMNT?
Steve had a long 9 week residency at PS+R before he’s off again to train the top soccer athletes in the world. He will be preparing the USMNT for the Nation’s League Semifinal against Jamaica on March 21, 2024 in Dallas, Texas. Tune in to the game at 7 pm to catch Steve and cheer on the USMNT as they battle to be champions of nations league for the third year in a row.
PS+R is happy to recognize Pete Groleau!
Pete is our hero fireman who wanted to get back to snowboarding after a devastating disc injury last year. He was dedicated to the process for an entire year and got successfully got back on the slopes in Montana this month. The elevation was not his friend this year, but, Pete is such an inspiration launching this comeback successfully due to his solid dedication to the program.
Deceleration: The missing factor in sport injury risk
Did you know that in team sports that require random, multidirectional movements such as soccer or lacrosse, that professional players perform 80-104% more decelerations than equivalently intense accelerations? It turns out that braking force is a major lever to pull when improving athlete performance and decreasing injury risk – including ACL tears. Improving deceleration ability is a complex task for training staff including physical therapists. It requires improving the athlete’s technical abilities (their movement quality), the ability to develop a high level of force in a horizontal vector and four different types of strength: eccentric strength, reactive strength, power and dynamic balance. Until recently, deceleration was tough to train and even more difficult to test. PS+R is honored to be using both Sparta Science force plates and LedsReact agility testing to measure deceleration in our athletes. This tool helps us to provide effective, targeted interventions that help our athletes develop these skills for improved performance and resilience while preventing injuries. Article Link
